This subject prepares preservice teachers for a range of professional roles within the classroom, school and wider community. Preservice teachers will investigate a range of curriculum theories and develop models of integrated curriculum that support play based learning.The subject will draw upon early years contexts to explore the relationship between theory, policy and practice. Preservice teachers will critically examine early years assessment and reporting practices and relate these to the broader role of schooling in communities, including assumptions. This subject also supports the preparation of a professional portfolio. Specifically for ECE preservice teachers, this subject provides a focus on the development of integrated early childhood curriculum and the importance of critically reflective planning. The subject prepares preservice teachers to integrate curriculum, pedagogy and assessment in ways that maximise young children's learning.
Learning Outcomes
- develop and critique models of integrated curriculum to meet identified learning goals in early years contexts;
- utilize a range of evidence based teaching strategies to support student engagement and ensure the development of language literacy and numeracy in early years contexts;
- develop and critique a range of ways of assessing, interpreting and reporting on student learning in early years contexts;
- analyse research, polices and practices related to the provision of supportive learning environments and student well-being in early years contexts;
- critically analyse the role of the teacher in early years contexts and develop strategies for school renewal.
