The aim of this subject is to provide an understanding of the importance of database technology in today's society and how they can use this technology to manage their own data requirements. The subject will include a detailed discussion of the storage and retrieval techniques for efficient processing of data.
Learning Outcomes
- understand the issues involved in the operation of a DBMS including transaction management, concurrency control and recovery;
- have an understanding of different DBMS architectures including distributed databases and client/server systems;
- understand the issues involved in the database design, data storage, indexing and query processing;
- attain some knowledge of new database developments including data warehouses, data mining and internet databases.
