The aims of this subject are to gain an understanding of the major issues involved in the design of database management systems, to study approaches involved in managing large collections of data and extracting useful information from them and to study how advanced data management techniques are being applied in the business context. Topics covered include distributed databases, data warehousing, information management and retrieval, concurrency, security, diverse contemporary database systems and examination of new database technologies.
