<b>General Chemistry revision</b> Acid/base and organic functional group chemistry. <b>Natural Product Chemistry</b> Extraction, chromatography, analysis, spectroscopy; terpenes, steroids, alkaloids, lignins. <b>Bio-organic Chemistry</b> Structure and function of carbohydrates, proteins and DNA; <b>Disperse systems</b> macromolecular colloids, emulsions. <b>Bio-inorganic Chemistry</b> Coordination complexes. Hemoglobin, Chlorophyll metalloenzymes. Photosynthesis : Rubisco and the C3 photosynthetic pathway. <b>Enzymatic Chemistry</b> The function of enzymes, inhibitors, cofactors, coenzymes and vitamins. <b>Lipids and Membranes</b> Fatty acids, complex lipids, lipid proteins, steroids, fluid mosaic membrane. Passive/active transport. <b>Bioenergetics</b> Catabolic and anabolic reactions. The metabolic role of ATP. Fatty acid synthesis. Glucogenesis. Learning Outcomes

• develop an understanding of molecular processes involved in natural product chemistry and biochemistry;
• survey of molecular techniques appropriate to working with natural products and biochemicals, with practical experience in the use of these methods;
• to provide a general framework on the aspects of chemistry/ biochemistry that are important in the biological sciences.
