BU1005 - Personal and Professional Skills in Business

Credit points: 03
Year: 2010
Student Contribution Band: Band 3
Administered by: School of Business

The focus of this subject is twofold: first, to develop a foundation skill-base for a successful university experience and secondly to provide students with a critical appreciation and understanding of the complex set of skills required in the workplace. There is a strong emphasis on academic communication and the types of assessments students are likely to encounter within their degree. The subject requires students to explore and develop intrapersonal, interpersonal and team skills and provides an insight into why these skills are essential traits of successful business professionals. Personal and Professional Skills in Business also includes exercises and activities that take students on a journey of self-discovery by requiring them to reflect critically on their own personal strengths and competencies in terms of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, communication skills, personality type, stress management techniques, learning style, decision making, negotiation and conflict resolution and group roles.
