The ecology, systematics, structure and function of terrestrial arthropods including the insects, arachnids and myriapods.Topics include evolution and systematics of terrestrial arthropods; structure and function of insect systems; biological control and integrated pest management; collecting, curating and identifying terrestrial arthropods. Assumed knowledge: students are expected to have a required level of understanding of (1) zoological processes and taxonomy (equivalent to first year level) and (2) data analysis and experimental design (equivalent to second year level).
Learning Outcomes
- to appreciate the diversity of terrestrial arthropods;
- to correctly identify and curate terrestrial arthropods;
- to know the variety of techniques used to collect terrestrial arthropods;
- to understand the evolutionary relationships between the major groups of terrestrial arthropods;
- to understand the theory behind biological control and integrated pest management.
Assumed Knowledge: | Students enrolling in this subject should have an excellent level of understanding of zoological processes and taxonomy equivalent to ZL1001, and data analysis and experimental design equivalent to BS2001. |
