This subject introduces students to some basic concepts and methods of the social sciences through a study of Australia's population from anthropological and Indigenous Australian perspectives. Topics covered in the subject include patterns of colonisation and settlement on the Australian continent, histories of the relationship between Indigenous and other Australians, and contemporary social identities and forms of cultural expression in multicultural Australia. Throughout the subject students will explore the perspectives of Indigenous and other Australians on their own cultures, histories, identities, senses of place and hopes for the future.

Learning Outcomes

• gain an understanding of anthropological methods and approaches to contemporary Australian society;
• develop insights into contemporary Indigenous Australian society;
• gain an understanding of pre-contact Australian history and patterns of human settlement;
• learn about the experience of European colonialism from Indigenous Australian perspectives;
• critically discuss the theoretical, political and ethical issues associated with social scientific research in Australia.
