This subject introduces students to the fundamentals, basic theory, and practice of photography. It provides an introduction to photography and the use of 35mm digital SLR cameras and accessories, and is especially useful to students who need a basic level of photographic skills as an adjunct to their major area of study. Students studying journalism, creative arts, earth, biological or medical sciences, anthropology, archaeology, tourism or media related courses would find this a useful subject, as will any student with an interest in improving their photographic skills.

Learning Outcomes

• acquire an understanding of the use of portable flash and other artificial light sources;
• develop a basic competency in the use of reflectors and diffusers to modify existing light conditions;
• develop an understanding of the role of light and shadow in the creation of visual form and texture;
• understand the operation of and achieve competence in the use of digital SLR cameras in the creation of photographic images;
• gain an understanding of the use of different photographic lenses;
• understand design principles as they apply to the creation of photographic images;
• understand and be able to apply the basic concepts of photographic lighting to the practical use and manipulation of light.
