This subject builds on the interpersonal communication skills developed in Interactive Processes 1. The focus of this subject is the development of knowledge and skills to support those undergoing a crisis. Crises may be precipitated by a number of factors. Environmental, socio-cultural and developmental factors may all play a part in the development of a crisis. Illness can precipitate a crisis as the person loses some degree of independence and ability. The recognition of our mortality may also lead to a crisis. Those who are suddenly bereaved may find adjustment to the loss of a major person in their lives difficult.
Learning Outcomes
- describe the grief process;
- develop strategies for self care while maintaining support of patients;
- discuss suicide and the management of those attempting suicide;
- discuss the role of the nurse in the management of a patient in crisis;
- identify interpersonal skills required for the support of those in crisis;
- outline the nurses role in supporting those who are grieving.
