This professional development subject uses an experiential learning approach to move between practice and theory in introducing students to key concepts of effective learning and teaching. Students are required to undertake 25 hours of professional experience in educational settings to establish praxis as a way of knowing. The subject uses these practical experiences along with other authentic situations to focus on key issues in managing teaching and learning in a variety of settings. Through the unpacking of these situations, students come to learn the value of a range of theoretical frameworks to do with learning, curriculum, pedagogy and classroom management. The subject is structured around the six themes of: Learning about Learners; Planning for Learning; Pedagogy; Safe and Supportive Learning Environments; Reflecting on Teachers' work; and Teacher Well-being. These themes are further developed in subsequent professional development subjects in the course.
Learning Outcomes
- identify and plan for the diverse needs of individual learners;
- critique lessons delivered by drawing on theoretical perspectives and empirical data;
- identify aspects of personal resilience as applied to professional situations;
- design and implement lesson plans using a range of pedagogical strategies that provide intellectually challenging learning experiences;
- observe, implement and critically evaluate a range of strategies and microskills for creating and maintaining safe and supportive learning environments at the classroom level.
