The basis for this subject is teaching children in the primary school within the subject English across the areas of speaking, listening, reading, viewing and writing, with particular reference to appropriate national and state curriculum frameworks and policies. Topics include a critique of several models of instruction which influence teaching across the language/literacy area, with a view to maximising learning opportunities for all children in today's Primary school classroom; a review of children's literature; investigation of a variety of text forms; issues of language diversity and learning styles and their impact on best teaching practice and a variety of means for assessing and reporting such learning. There is a focus on meaning and relevance within the schooling and other contexts, as the basis for selecting literacy instructional techniques and materials to be used. Consideration of the profound changes in literacy demands for children today and the major role media and technology play are featured.
