Available to Computer Science postgraduate students only.
This subject focuses on the presentation and analysis of fundamental algorithms and design principles which underlie communications protocols and their performance characteristics. Data security issues in networks, including algorithms and security protocols are presented. Students will be required to demonstrate mastery of the topics covered at a level appropriate for postgraduate studies, including analysis and design capability and reporting abilities.These are to be demonstrated in assignments specific to postgraduate students, additional to those required of the undergraduate subject on which this subject is piggybacked.
Learning Outcomes
- Analyse and compare elements of specific network and transport layer protocols to understand their performance and their limitations review basic data communications algorithms and principles used in network protocols selected topics concerning recent developments e.g. high level directory services and self- configuring networks understand basic cryptographic algorithms and protocols in a network environment understand basic security issues in networks including privacy, identification and signatures and authentication understand client-server implementations and their performance.
Graduate Qualities
- The ability to appraise information critically;
- The ability to use independent judgment to synthesise information to make intellectual and/or creative advances;
- The ability to conceptualise and evaluate a range of potential solutions to relevant problems.
