Introduction to reaction kinetics and mechanisms. Analysis of rate data and formulation of rate equations and reaction mechanisms. Fundamentals of ideal reactor behaviour. Design of batch, completely mixed and plug flow reactors for single and multiple reactions. Multiple and Recycle reactors. Temperature and pressure effects, adiabatic and non-adiabatic reactions, thermal stability of reactors. Simultaneous mass and energy balances in design of homogenous reactions. Residence time distribution. Modelling of non-ideal reactor behaviour. Heat and mass transfer effects in heterogeneous reactions, catalytic solid-fluid reactions, diffusion and reaction in porous catalysts.
Learning Outcomes
- the ability to collect and analyse raw kinetic data and determine the rate law;
- a good understanding of the theory and fundamentals governing chemical reaction processes and transport phenomena occurring within reactors;
- the ability to apply this knowledge to reactor design;
- the ability to communicate effectively in all aspects of reaction engineering via assignments and reports.
