This unit is designed to build on the foundations of Modern Standard Chinese established in CI1001 and CI1002. Speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills are further developed, as are students' skills and strategies as a language learner. A situational approach is employed to develop functional fluency in a variety of contexts, and attention is paid to the socio-cultural aspects of language use.
Learning Outcomes
- a level of at least basic transactional proficiency (1 on the ISLPR scale);
- the ability to conduct simple conversations on familiar topics (childhood, education, travel, everyday life, activities, life after university), and to speak about oneself and matters of personal interest;
- the capacity to express likes and dislikes and respond to common instructions in familiar situations;
- the ability to read and write simple sentences;
- familiarity with aspects of Chinese writing and culture.

Assumed Knowledge: | To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level |

Assessment: | end of semester exam (40%); quizzes or tests (10%); assignments (45%); workbook (5%). |
Special Assessment Requirements: | Completion of fortnightly homework assignments is a compulsory requirement of the subject. Students must pass the examination in order to pass the subject. |
