In this English subject students are introduced to ways of critically analysing a variety of texts for academic purposes. This will be achieved through reflection upon the structure of texts using informal logic and persuasive devices. A range of documents will be examined for analysis from the media and popular culture, public everyday texts, science and health related texts and oral transcripts.
Learning Outcomes
- identify devices of persuasion and techniques of bias in a range of text types (print and visual);
- assess informal logic in arguments and evaluate the use of statistics in texts;
- develop critical ability in relation to reading, speaking and writing;
- critically analyse the social construction in texts in relation to the who, how and why;
- develop the ability to deconstruct texts at an introductory level.

- The ability to think critically, to analyse and evaluate claims, evidence and arguments, and to reason and deploy evidence clearly and logically;
- The ability to evaluate that information.
