This subject will cover the medical aspects of sport and exercise including topics such as injury epidemiology; overtraining and overuse injuries; muscle, tendon, bone and joint injury; prevention of injury; drugs in sport; blood biochemistry; immune response to exercise; screening of athletes; onfield assessment and emergency procedures.
Learning Outcomes
- to describe the fundamental basis of injury and illness resulting from sport and exercise;
- to describe short and long-term treatments for common injuries related to sport and exercise;
- demonstrate an ability to perform sport strapping;
- to describe the classes of prohibited drugs and procedures, why athletes take these substances, their effects and possible side effects;
- to describe changes in blood gases, electrolytes and immune function in response to exercise.
