This subject will examine the complexity of chronic illness or disability, rehabilitation and palliative care. It will focus on the development of a holistic approach to nursing care to assist the novice nurse to provide safe and compassionate care to those who endure chronic illness or disability, require rehabilitation, or need palliative care.

Learning Outcomes

• Integrate knowledge of human science to the psychopathological and pathophysiological changes occurring in individuals living with a range of chronic health conditions and/or terminal illness;
• Appropriately assess the client with a chronic illness or disability;
• Discuss nursing strategies used in the management of individuals experiencing a range of chronic health problems and those with terminal illness;
• Apply rehabilitation principles to prevent complications; maintain and restore function for those individuals experiencing chronic health conditions and disabilities;
• Describe supportive responses to individuals and families experiencing chronic health conditions and those living with terminal illness through the provision of increasingly complex therapeutic nursing management.
