Available to undergraduate students who are eligible to take a level 2 subject.

This subject will examine cultural diversity in the workplace by exploring definitions of culture and the workplace through an investigation of the following concepts: cultural parameters, cultural competence, cultural intelligence and cultural capital through on-line learning including discussion board activities. This subject will explore definitions of work with regard to both global and local market places and the impact of work on culture, society and the individual. Theoretical constructs will be considered in relation to case studies of cultural diversity in the workplace. In order to complete this subject students must have access to the World Wide Web. Students who do not have access to email should notify the Subject Co-ordinator.

Learning Outcomes

• examine the complex nature of culture and the issues related to principles of Inclusion, cultural intelligence, cultural competence, cultural capital and cultural collaborations;
• define the concepts of both culture and the workplace and determine how these feature as constituents of the socio-cultural fabric of Australian society;
• describe real and potential barriers to effective intercultural communication, including cultural shock, and cultivate an appreciation for cultural and communicative differences;
• analyse the ways our diverse histories, cultural background, individual experiences and personal identities affect cross cultural interactions in the workplace and discuss how these interactions can become models of empowerment.
