Introduction to the chemical process industry and related chemical concepts. Topics covered include:Chemical process industries: petrochemical, agricultural and mineral processing applications. Introduction to the periodic table, atoms, ions, elements, valency. Molecules, chemical bonds and the chemical formulae. The mole, units of mass, volume and concentration. Types and properties of materials: solids, liquids and gases. The ideal gas law. Chemical reactions: stoichiometry, conversion, yield, limiting reactant, oxidation and reduction. Mass balances with and without reaction, conservation of mass, degrees of freedom analysis, definition of basis. Introduction to phase equilibrium.Chemical process unit operations: evaporators, mixers, filters, reactors. Chemical processes with recycle and purge.

Learning Outcomes

• develop and practise strategies and tactics for problem identification, formulation and solution;
• develop engineering communication skills by (a) describing chemical processes; (b) using diagrams and calculations within written documents to support your ideas;
• learn and practise problem-solving skills, the application of engineering fundamentals and systems approaches in performing material balances;
• learn to develop and use a systems approach to understanding engineering processes;
• to understand the fundamental processes that underpin the chemical industry in Australia.
