This subject introduces the major theories of counselling and ethics in counselling practice. The subject will also encourage you to apply these theories within a specific setting. The development of a personal theory of counselling will enable targeting of the older adult, younger adult, adolescent, or child.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrated awareness of the major theories of counselling, including psychodynamic, behavioural, cognitive-behavioural, client- centred, gestalt therapy and family systems therapy;
- Describe and evaluate major theories of counselling;
- Describe and evaluate the basis of ethical practice in counselling.
Graduate Qualities
- The ability to deploy critically evaluated information to practical ends;
- The acquisition of coherent and disciplined sets of skills, knowledge, values and professional ethics from at least one discipline area;
- The ability to speak and write clearly, coherently and creatively.
