This subject reviews the theory and practice of teaching English to Indigenous children as a second language. It deals with the specific educational needs of Indigenous students, issues involving second language learning and oral language development. It considers specific issues related to reading and writing a second language for Indigenous peoples and considers how all these relate to culturally inclusive curricula.
Learning Outcomes
- develop and demonstrate knowledge of language issues pertaining to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students;
- develop and demonstrate knowledge in theories of second language acquisition;
- develop and demonstrate knowledge and skills in effective teaching strategies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who speak English as a second or subsequent language;
- develop skills in making linkages with current policy and applying learning to current curriculum, assessment and reporting frameworks.
