Introduction to data switching techniques, synchronisation, error and flow control. Classes of computer networks, terminal networks and multiplexers, introduction to the OSI seven layer model. Medium access control of IEEE 802.x local area networks, wireless data networks. Internetworking issues, routing, common protocols such as TCP/IP, introduction to emerging network technologies.
Learning Outcomes
- analyse problems in computer communication systems with confidence;
- describe and discuss the basis behind contemporary standards applicable to computer data communications;
- make informed decisions in the specification and design of computer networks.
