Available to postgraduate students of Marine & Tropical Biology, in a relevant discipline
Agricultural systems that feed 6.5 billion Homo sapiens should maintain productivity over time without reducing the condition of the landscape ie be sustainable. In this subject, we address the principles by which farming systems can be managed to be structural and functional mimics of more complex natural ecosystems. The ecology and sustainability of selected agricultural systems will be examined, as will the implications of extensive and intensive agriculture. Particular emphasis will be given to sustainable land-use solutions in the tropics where climate is often unpredictable and stresses significant. The agroecology of agricultural systems in developed and developing societies will be compared and the potential roles of emerging technologies and land-use strategies evaluated.
There are additional charges for this subject; please contact the School for details.
