This subject introduces students to the diversity of productive tropical ecosystems including farming systems and production practices and their interactions with the natural environment. The subject includes field excursions to various commercial properties and agricultural research stations in North Queensland.

Learning Outcomes

• develop basic knowledge required for understanding scientific principles of agriculture and their application in tropical agroecosystems;
• provide a perspective of innovative sustainable land management practices within the context of catchment and ecosystem processes;
• acquire proficiency in observation and evaluation of methods of farming, data collection, and analysis;
• gain experience in problem-solving and scientific decision-making and to develop skills in preparing and presenting written technical reports;
• enhance knowledge and understanding of a specified area of applied biology.

Graduate Qualities

• The ability to think critically, to analyse and evaluate claims, evidence and arguments;
• The ability to adapt knowledge to new situations;
