The subject focuses on the meaning of self. Using the medium of social literature (including novels, plays, poetry, film, biographies, autobiographies etc) the subject aims to heighten students awareness of the ways in which factors such as class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, abilities that shape human experience. Attention is also drawn to the way our own experiences impact on the way we communicate, interpersonally, in groups and communities. This subject may involve an additional on campus workshop for Indigenous students in study period one and or study period eleven.
Learning Outcomes
- to develop a beginning understanding of the means by which we come to know the social world and our place in it;
- to develop a critical awareness of ones own self;
- to develop an awareness of alternative ways of perceiving, interpreting and acting upon the environment and in so doing to enhance ones ability to empathise with others;
- to develop an awareness of what theory means in this process of knowing;
- to use the various mediums of communication to develop an understanding of human interaction.
