Available to students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma of Neonatology.
Review of normal metabolic processes and their physiological, biochemical and pathological manifestations. The embryological development of the gastro-intestinal tract will be reviewed with particular regard to congenital abnormalities and their management. Other problems in the overall management of a sick baby in a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be considered.
Learning Outcomes
- to acquire the theoretical skills to manage these problems in the context of a modern Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit;
- to acquire the underpinning knowledge and skills to recognise, investigate and manage the common metabolic and other problems of neonates;
- to develop an understanding of basic metabolic processes and their pathology in the neonate.
