This subject provides students with advanced criminological research and policy knowledge, focusing on the broader questions of process and policy in criminal justice. Such knowledge will include coverage of the trends and issues, including contentious policy debates, in contemporary criminology, as well as inherent or distinctively significant regional issues relating to crime, justice and society within the North Queensland context. The subject builds upon the research and teaching expertise of staff within the school in the areas of criminology and the criminal justice system. Students will be taught appropriate research methods for conducting research in criminology and criminal justice. As part of the subject, students will undertake group research projects to design and implement a study in one area of the criminal justice system, such as juvenile diversion, adult corrections or policing.
Learning Outcomes
- 1. To provide students with advanced theoretical, research and policy knowledge relating to the broad field of criminology. 2. To provide students with opportunities to debate the strengths and weaknesses of various criminal justice system and other public policies relevant to crime and justice. 3. To prepare students with research skills for conducting field work in the criminal justice system. 4. To allow students to undertake research within the criminal justice system within their local community.
