Enrolment in this subject is restricted to all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology.
This subject introduces students to the profession of speech pathology in Australia, through the presentation of professional guidelines and documents and workplace practices. Scope and models of speech pathology practice will be presented and discussed. Students will be introduced to the core communication and swallowing disabilities commonly assessed and managed in speech pathology practice.
Learning Outcomes
- students will be able to describe the primary/essential features of developmental and acquired speech, language, voice, fluency and swallowing impairments;
- students will be able to describe the impact of communication and swallowing abilities on everyday life;
- students will be able to describe the effect of individual differences, particularly applying to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, on speech pathology practice;
- students will be able to display a sound understanding of models of practice and practice types;
- students will be able to interpret and summarise speech pathology competency standards, ethics, principles and scope of practice.
