This block subject will synthesise issues of patient care from previous clinical subjects, providing an overview of the physiotherapy management of chronic diseases. The subject will be held over a two week intensive learning period prior to students' first clinical placements. A variety of chronic conditions will be explored including neurological, congenital, respiratory and musculoskeletal examples. Students will be required to draw on previous learning and investigate new material to develop comprehensive, holistic management plans. Problem-based learning and peer tutoring will be a feature of the subject, further developing team-work and case presentation skills.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an understanding of chronic disease patterns including epidemiological issues particularly as they relate to rural and remote areas and specific patient populations;
- demonstrate an understanding of specific chronic diseases/conditions, particularly with regard to their pathophysiology, aetiology, medical and physiotherapy management and the physical, functional, psychological and social ramifications for the patient/client and family;
- demonstrate sound clinical reasoning skills incuding the ability to identify and prioritise patients' problems, develop a management plan founded on an evidence-based approach and anticipate difficulties which are likely to arise;
- demonstrate the skills required to work within and manage a team to develop and present a concise, professional case presentation, incorporating the proficient use of audio-visual aids and use of appropriate medical and scientific terminology.
