This subject is designed to provide an understanding of the principles and applications of accounting in the contemporary business environment. Topics covered will include the preparation and interpretation of basic financial statements, contemporary valuation and reporting challenges, and the role of corporate governance. Throughout the syllabus, emphasis will be placed on the role of the accounting discipline both proactively in managerial decision-making, and also in the assessment of the impact of management decisions on the financial performance and position of the firm.
Learning Outcomes
- develop an understanding of the nature of assets, liabilities and income in the context of the accounting equation;
- develop an ability to prepare the following accounting statements: balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement;
- develop an understanding of the relevance of corporate governance and multi-stakeholder reporting in modern society;
- develop an ability to analyse and interpret financial statements;
- develop an understanding of cost-volume relationships and preparing basic budgeted financial statements.
