This subject will examine the speech varieties which are based on English, known as pidgins, creoles and Aboriginal English and which are widely spoken by many Indigenous Australians, including at times, as their Mother Tongue language. Topics covered include: development of pidgin and creole languages; attitudes to these language varieties; comparision of the two Australian creoles with Indigenous languages; and implications for education. This subject will specifically incorporate a micro study on Torres Strait Creole, in particular, noting internal differences denoting Eastern and Western Torres Strait regions.

Learning Outcomes

• describe the differences between Australian English and the English based languages - Kriol, Torres Strait Creole and Aboriginal English;
• explain the development of pidgins and creoles worldwide as described by linguists;
• identify some features of Kriol, Torres Strait Creole or Aboriginal English;
• read basic Kriol or Torres Strait Creole written in a phonemic orthography;
• describe some implications for creole speakers attending school in Australia who promote the use of Standard Australian English.
