Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.
This subject is designed to lead students through an examination of North Queensland society from an Indigenous perspective. Students will be introduced to issues and notions through online learning including the discussion board and e-mail, digital medium and reading materials. Therefore it is essential that students have access to the World Wide Web to complete this subject, students who do not have access to e-mail should notify the subject coordinator. A case study approach will allow students to explore Government policies and historical factors and the impact on political, social and cultural change in specific areas of North Queensland. Encounters between European settlers and Indigenous people and relationships between different Indigenous groups existing in a changing world will be studied. This subject will provide students with an understanding of contemporary Indigenous societies in North Queensland, and their resilience in surviving and the struggle for equity in Australian society.
Learning Outcomes
- Examine North Queensland society from an Indigenous perspective;
- Critically analyse the impact of historical policies and events on Indigenous people;
- Explore political, social and cultural change, encounters between European settlers and Indigenous people and relationships between different Indigenous groups;
- Identify issues of resilience and survival in contemporary society.
