This subject introduces a range of theoretical approaches to the study of the practices of education with a particular focus on relations between teachers work, constitutive factors (e.g., discourses of education; pedagogical and curricular practices and technologies), contextual factors (e.g., social and cultural contexts, including differences and inequities; policies; systems of provision and governance; age relations and child development), and outcomes of education. The materials for this subject will be available on-line through LearnJCU, therefore students will require access to the World Wide Web for participation in this subject.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate knowledge of discourses of education across a range of national contexts;
- demonstrate knowledge of different theoretical approaches (e.g., cognitive, humanist, and behaviorist psychological theories; functionalist and conflict sociological theories) to the analysis of schooling;
- demonstrate knowledge of socio-cultural contexts, systems of provision, policy and governance, curricular and pedagogical practices, and outcomes of schooling;
- demonstrate ability to analyse relations among discourses of education, socio-cultural contexts, systems of provision, policy and governance, curricular and pedagogical practices, and outcomes of schooling using different theoretical approaches.
