This subject has been designed to equip pre-service teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach social and environmental education, the arts (namely dance, drama, music, visual arts and new media) and health and physical education to primary aged children. Students will be involved in practical activities that will enable them to develop skills and methods required to teach and integrate concepts with other Key Learning Areas. Research related to learning and teaching in these Key Learning Areas will be emphasised with opportunities for students to engage in and reflect upon these experiences provided.
Learning Outcomes
- evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to primary school age children's learning;
- explore ways of organising the learning environment to ensure effective learning and teaching;
- demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just social and environmental education, the arts (namely dance, drama, music, visual arts and new media) and health and physical education curriculum for primary school age children;
- diagnose, value and respond to different individual learning needs in social and environmental education, the arts (namely dance, drama, music, visual arts and new media) and health and physical education, taking into account factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, ability, learning styles, behaviour, social circumstance and culture;
- construct and articulate a personal philosophy, regarding the teaching and learning of social and environmental education, the arts (namely dance, drama, music, visual arts and new media) and health and physical education.
