Available to Graduate Diploma of Education (Primary) students only, must be completed with or before ED5227.
This subject has been designed to equip pre-service teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach english, mathematics, science and to primary aged children. Students will be involved in practical activities that will enable them to develop skills and methods required to teach and integrate concepts with other Key Learning Areas. Research related to learning and teaching in these Key Learning Areas will be emphasised with opportunities for students to engage in and reflect upon these experiences provided.
Learning Outcomes
- evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to primary school age children's learning;
- explore ways of organising the learning environment to ensure effective learning and teaching;
- demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropiate and socially just english, mathematics, science curriculum for primary school age children of the learning processes used by primary school age children of different socio-cultural backgrounds in learning english, mathematics, science;
- construct and articulate a personal philosophy of english, mathematics and science.

Assessment: | end of semester exam (25%); in-class tasks - mathematics, science, english (38%); partially-invigilated - oral presentation of students' out-of-class work - mathematics (20%); english assessment (17%). |
Special Assessment Requirements: | Assessment will vary according to strand. A proportion of the assessment in each strand will consist of in-class tasks and/or assignments consisting of one or a combination of: e-portfolio containing responses to readings, reflection on learning, reflection on workshop tasks; lesson and/or Unit plans; in-class assessment of workshop tasks; in-class presentations; glossary of significant KLA terms; examples of student's work. Science and music strands will include an end of semester exam. |
