Learning Outcomes
- Be able to describe computer architecture, including CPU, memory systems,buses, I/O and peripherals; and understand principles of computer design,performance and cost;
- Be able to explain how computer architecture impacts on system performance in terms of instruction set design, code density, and space/time tradeoffs;
- Understand how operating system design decisions affect application performance and design;
- Understand the nature of services managed by operating systems including file systems, processes and threads and their scheduling, virtual memory, and access control;
- Appreciate the purpose, functions, design and implementation issues involved with the components of modern operating systems and understand how operating system facilities are used in application programming.
