In this English subject students are introduced to ways of critically analysing a variety of texts for academic purposes. Possibilities for alternative readings and writings will be encouraged. A range of documents from the media and popular culture, public everyday texts, science and health related texts and transcripts of talks will be integrated for analysis.
Learning Outcomes
- identify devices of persuasion and techniques of bias in a range of text types (print and visual);
- assess informal logic in arguments and evaluate the use of statistics in texts;
- critically analyse the social construction of texts in relation to ideology, discourse and power;
- deconstruct texts and present readings of oppositional positions;
- develop critical ability in relation to reading, speaking and writing.
