This English subject introduces students to literature where texts are examined for how they are used, by whom and for what purpose. Students will develop techniques of analytical and critical reading, and the theory and practice of language use is also introduced, emphasising how spoken and written texts work in a range of social, cultural and community contexts.
Learning Outcomes
- read and analyse a range of academic texts including various genres such as literature, film, mathematical, graphic and tabular information;
- engage with a range of print and film texts applying knowledge and understanding of literary genres and techniques in the appraisal of selected texts;
- analyse the way in which texts operate as social practices within social, historical, political and scientific contexts and within relations of power and ideology;
- critically review texts to reveal the underlying logic and premises upon which their arguments are constructed;
- critically analyse and interpret a range of texts demonstrating skills of academic writing as well as knowledge of literary terms and conventions of literary criticism.
