This subject provides the student with a practical introduction to the basic techniques of underwater survey, position fixing, mapping, recording and conservation. Lectures will also describe and critique research approaches used by maritime archaeologists and the different techniques they employ in their work. Masters students will assist with development of logistics, permits, health and safety protocols, equipment and operations, before, during and after the fieldwork. Available to students who hold appropriate diving certification and satisfy the competency requirements of the University Diving Officer.

Learning Outcomes
- develop skills in identifying and recording cultural material in the underwater environment;
- gain knowledge of the methods and techniques appropriate to the study of different types of wrecks and submerged structures;
- appreciate the safety factors and logistics involved in carrying out research in the underwater environment.
