Available to all students subject to portfolio presentation and interview. This is a core subject within the Bachelor of Visual Arts and Bachelor of Creative Arts degrees. Students should register for practical group through Students Online Class Signup.

Students will develop an appreciation of aesthetic qualities, conceptual approaches, skills and practices employed in the visual arts. Elements and principles of design as required by the visual artist will be explored as conduits for visual expression. Practical workshops with demonstrations and class discussions will provide students with skills for the realisation of their ideas.

Learning Outcomes

• Investigate links between art theory and art practice and apply this knowledge to set projects based on the theme of narrative, time and place;
• Apply a personal aesthetic and demonstrate a thorough understanding of visual languages, contexts and concepts through set projects;
• Develop the skills and knowledge necessary to produce a book that incorporates a choice of print and binding techniques, integrating both image and text to a professional standard;
• Gain basic documentation skills relevant to visual communication in 2D areas;
• Reflect on and critically appraise the artworks produced using language and vocabulary appropriate to the discipline, and demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of historical, theoretical and technical aspects of the visual arts.

Special Assessment Requirements:	In order to establish the authenticity of work submitted for assessment, attendance at practical classes is compulsory. Rolls are kept and work submitted by students with an attendance of less than 80% will not be eligible for assessment unless prior approval has been obtained in writing from the lecturer.
