This subject provides a sophisticated introduction to tourism as a complex economic socio-cultural and environmental system. It considers the nature of employment and human resource development in tourism including concepts of leadership and information based decision making. Tourism intelligence, tourism information communication systems and the role of research in management are considered. Styles of tourism research including a succinct treatment of core methods and statistical approaches as well as project management in tourism are reviewed. Students are required to undertake a study of a select facet of tourism producing a substantial review paper outlining contemporary issues and analytical needs. Assessment consists of an examination and the major review paper.

- understand the traditions and culture of research and scholarship in tourism and its relevance to practice;
- appreciate the underlying systems which organise tourism.
