The purpose of this subject is to introduce students to the demand, distribution, delivery and development aspects of tourism. A systems approach is used to explore tourism in the generating, transit and destination regions. This course focuses on the social sciences of tourism, namely geography, economics, psychology and history; as well as the industry's positive and negative social, cultural, economic, and environmental impacts. The subject may include a fieldwork component which will provide a practical understanding of a range of tourism settings.

Learning Outcomes

• 2. To examine the growth in tourism and traveller numbers, why people are motivated to travel and who these people are;
• 3. To understand who provides the tourism services and how they are delivered;
• 4. To identify how tourism destinations are managed and marketed;
• 5. To appreciate the broad social, economic and environmental impacts of tourism;
• 1. To understand the term "tourism" and the components that make up the "tourism system".
