Students will study selected playwrights and theatre practitioners whose theatrical praxis is essentially imagist. Playwrights include Samuel Beckett, Sam Shepard and Sarah Kane. The subject will also include the examination of the theatre of Jan Fabre and other avant-garde artists whose theatre is usually presented in international theatre festivals. Students will analyse selected plays as <i>potential</i> performance texts and will examine the physical properties of text through practical exploration as an <b>actor</b>, <b>director</b> or <b>designer</b>.
Learning Outcomes
- analyse contemporary plays and performances within a social, political and historical context;
- realise the performance text within the framework of a rehearsed reading of selected scenes in any set text;
- lead a seminar on selected aspects of the performance text that involves researching the play's production history;
- participate in and contribute to seminar discussions;
- explore the physical aspects of texts.
