Are we becoming fatalistic about environmental change? The nature of debate about environmental issues and environmental risk has changed significantly over the last three decades. In contrast to the radical confrontations of the 1980s, mainstream politicians, major corporations and local governments now wish to present a 'green' image of environmental awareness. How has this institutionalisation of environmental risk affected public responses and attitudes? Can consumer society ever be 'green'? This subject looks at the way social sciences can contribute to the understanding of contemporary environmental issues bringing the interpretative power of conceptual analysis to bear on pressing and controversial environmental issues. Environmental issues - from agriculture and heavy industry to domestic life - are addressed in terms of the delineation of political, social and cultural aspects; local and regional significance; and national and global context.
