The subject provides an introduction to ageing and mental health. The demography of the aged population in both the USA and Australia is addressed. The biological, social and psychological processes of ageing as well as the stereotypes of ageing and successful ageing are discussed in conjunction with concerns of race, gender and crime. The demography, prevalence and adequacy of the services for both mental disorders of the normal population and those of the elderly are covered. Additionally common emotional problems, psychiatric disorders and cognitive disorders of the elderly are addressed.
