This subject will provide the theoretical foundation and professional skill base necessary for competent practice in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment/management of acquired motor speech impairments of neurological origin (the dysarthrias and apraxia of speech) across the lifespan. Informal and formal methods of assessment, diagnosis and treatment/management will be described and demonstrated.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of: The neuorological diseases, disorders and injuries associated with acquired speech impairments in adults and children; The underlying pathology and features associated with the dysarthrias and apraxia of speech; The limitations and restrictions acquired speech impairments can impose on the activities and participation of people with these impairments;
- Students will demonstrate competency in: Selecting and administering appropriate informal and formal assessments for acquired speech impairments; Analysing and interpreting assessment results; Identifying further information and referral requirements for acquired speech impairments; Developing comprehensive and detailed palns for intervention for acquired speech impairments; Reporting on findings and making recommendations for future management.
