Enrolment restricted to students in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology.
This subject will provide in-depth knowledge of theories and processes relating to oromotor function and speech development, and to current assessment and intervention practices for developmental speech impairments. Practical opportunities will be provided for students to observe, record and analyse normal and impaired oromotor function and speech, and treatment for speech impairments in children; and for students to practice simple assessment administration. Cultural consideations for phonological development and impairment will be discussed.
Learning Outcomes
- Students will demonstrate and apply knowledge of the theories and processes underlying: normal oral structure and function; normal sound and speech development; cultural and ESL considerations for phonological development and impairment (including indigenous languages); impaired speech development (articularion and phonology); assessment and diagnosis of speech impairments; intervention for speech impairments;
- Students will demonstrate skills in: recording, transcribing and analysing speech production in children with normal and impaired development; assessment procedures for oromotor function and speech skills; and planning intervention for developmental speech impairments.
