The invention of photography in the early years of the nineteenth century swept the reproduction of images into the machine age from the first experiments to capture an image of nature with a camera. This subject follows these early beginnings to the mid-twenthieth century through researching the history and discussing the work of pivotal photographers and the styles and contents of particular movements in photography. It also investigates developing technical advancements in photograhy and its place and impact within a changing society.

- Understand the history and significance of the development of photography;
- Document, analyse and evaluate the differing styles and techniques of early and significant international and Australian photographers;
- Understand the role of the photographer played in shaping peoples perceptions of their identity and the world around them;
- Understand the role of photography in the developing technology of the nineteenth century and its continuing role in society;
- An ability to present, probe and define the medium of photography through the development of analytical research and learning skills.
