Enrolment in this subject is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy.
The subject provides physiotherapy students with an introduction to acute care issues as they relate to physiotherapy practice. Students apply their knowledge of body systems, particularly the cardiopulmonary system, gained in BM1031:03 Anatomy and Physiology for Rehabilitation Science 1 and BM1032:03 Anatomy and Physiology for Rehabilitation Science 2, to the analysis of clinical cases commonly seen in the acute health care setting. Students acquire assessment and intervention skills and further develop clinical reasoning abilities.
Learning Outcomes
- understand the structure and function of the cardiopulmonary system as it relates to key illnesses and diseases;
- identify the impact of cardiopulmonary illness on functional capacity and the implications for physiotherapy;
- competently perform an assessment of an individual with cardiopulmonary pathology and integrate findings with pathophysiological knowledge to produce a physiotherapy intervention plan;
- demonstrate proficient and safe performance of selected physiotherapy intervention techniques for individuals with cardiopulmonary problems;
- demonstrate the effective communication skills required to produce a successful clinical interaction.
