This subject examines international relations theories, particularly in terms of their capacity to illuminate issues of international security and international political economy. It has five main parts: an introduction to international relations theories in the context of international security; an examination of competing explanations of international conflict and cooperation in the international political economy; an exploration of "alternative" theories of international studies; an analysis of how countries devise their foreign policies to manage or avoid conflict and to seek cooperation in both the security/political and political economy areas; and a study of some of the major issues in the contemporary international arena, including peace-building, global governance, and identity and culture in international relations.
